It wasn’t until 1894 that the first basketball was officially marketed—a distinctive, laced ball measuring about 32 inches in circumference, nearly four inches larger than a soccer ball, and weighing less than 20 ounces. This early design would evolve over time, and by the 1948–49 season, the modern laceless molded ball was standardized, set at 30 inches in circumference, establishing the size still in use today.

With every passing decade, the advantage of height in basketball became increasingly clear. Teams anchored by towering players often dominated, reshaping the game and forcing rulemakers to adapt.
In the 1940s, Bob Kurland, a 7-foot center at Oklahoma A&M, powered his team to back-to-back NCAA championships while leading the nation in scoring during the 1945–46 season. At nearly the same time, George Mikan, a 6'10" center at DePaul University, redefined what a big man could do. Known for his ambidextrous sweeping hook shots, Mikan scored more than 550 points in each of his final two college seasons before embarking on a professional career that yielded more than 11,000 points over nine years. The Third Stage of Growth: March Madness Expands
The third stage of the NCAA tournament’s growth began after the end of UCLA’s dynasty in the mid-1970s. Champions began emerging from across the country, reflecting the growing parity in the sport. The tournament field expanded dramatically—from 25 teams in 1974 to 64 in 1985, 65 in 2001, and 68 in 2011 with the introduction of “play-in games.” The modern three-week spectacle culminates in the Final Four weekend, now an event rivaling the Super Bowl and World Series in public interest and media coverage.
The surge in popularity also spilled over into smaller divisions, with Division II, Division III, and NAIA championships growing in attention and prestige. Basketball’s reach at the grassroots level is equally staggering: roughly 17,000 U.S. high schools field teams, and all 50 states host annual state tournaments, making the sport one of the most widely played in the country.
U.S. Professional Basketball
While college basketball grew into a cultural institution, the professional game carved its own identity, first flourishing in the Middle Atlantic and New England states. Two of the earliest dominant clubs were Trenton (New Jersey) and the New York Wanderers. Soon after, the Buffalo Germans emerged, starting in 1895 as teenage members of the Buffalo YMCA. Over 44 years, they compiled a staggering record—792 wins in 878 games—before disbanding.
A number of pioneering players elevated the professional game’s style. Among them were Edward and Lew Wachter, Jimmy Williamson, Jack Inglis, and Bill Hardman, innovators who introduced the bounce pass and long pass as offensive weapons. They also helped usher in the rule, adopted in 1923–24, requiring fouled players to shoot their own free throws.
Before World War II, no professional team was more celebrated than the Original Celtics, founded in 1915 by New York City youths. By the 1920s they had become virtually unbeatable, winning 204 of 215 games in the 1922–23 season alone. Their dominance forced the team to disband in 1928, though they later regrouped as the New York Celtics in the 1930s before retiring in 1936. Other strong professional clubs of the early era included teams from Fond du Lac, Wisconsin; East Liverpool, Ohio; the New York Nationals; the Paterson (New Jersey) Crescents; and the South Philadelphia Hebrew All Stars, better known as the Sphas.
The First Professional League
The first professional league, the National Basketball League (NBL), was formed in 1898. Unlike the college game, early NBL contests often took place inside a chicken-wire cage, which kept hostile fans at bay and prevented the ball from going out-of-bounds. A true breakthrough came in 1946, when Walter A. Brown, president of the Boston Garden, founded the Basketball Association of America (BAA). Rules and Innovations
To balance competition, the NBA introduced the annual college draft, giving weaker teams first access to top collegiate talent. The 1954–55 season brought three rule changes that reshaped the game:
Teams were now required to shoot within 24 seconds, preventing endless stalling.
